TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) – The fish pictured is rare, according to FWC, and was just caught off the coast of Pensacola.
Wildlife officials say not a lot is known about this fish, but it was first described in 1935 off the coast of Cuba. Most known records of this species are from deep waters, deper than 300 meters, off the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, officials say.
This particular catch is special, according to FWC, because it was caught in very shallow water.
The fish is headed to St. Petersburg where scientists will first verify the ID and also take a tissue sample for DNA analysis and then another specimen will be preserved and deposited in the FWRI Fish collection in St. Pete, officials say.
