BROOKSVILLE, Fla. (970 WFLA) – Hernando County deputies say a man is dead after a SWAT situation in Brooksville.

Deputies say they don't know yet if the man died from an exchange of gunfire or it was self-inflicted, according to Deputy Rose DeJesus with the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

HCSO says the SWAT team was called to the home Monday around 12:15 a.m. on the 18000 block of Benes Roush Road.

Hernando authorities say they were called to the scene for an armed 56-year-old man who was suicidal following a dispute with his spouse. When deputies arrived, they say they heard several shots being fired from within the home.

Once they tried to make contact with the man, deputies say several shots were fired in their direction, but no law enforcement officers were harmed.

Deputies say the spouse was able to flee the residence, unharmed, before deputies arrived.

FDLE is also investigating.
