Deputies Say Polk Paramedic Was Doing Odd Blood Draws

WINTER HAVEN -- A domestic violence investigation led to the firing of a Polk County EMS paramedic. It also revealed some blood draws that were definitely extracurricular.

Polk deputies arrested Daniel Murphy, 23, after they say he got into an argument with his girlfriend at their Lakeland home, grabbing her cellphone and hurling it against a wall.

Detectives say Murphy had two prescription drugs, multiple IV lines, needles, saline bags and syringes... taken from work.

Murphy's girlfriend allegedly told them about an incident several months ago in which she had too much to drink, and wke up to find an IV in her arm as blood dripped out. According to Sheriff Grady Judd, Murphy denied that incident but claimedhe had taken blood on other occasions for a friend's "art project."

"You can't make this stuff up," Judd told reporters. He also related that Murphy had been fired.
