MacDill Pays Tribute to Lost Black Cemetery

TAMPA -- Officials at MacDill Air Force Base held a service on a site they believe was used for a historic African-American cemetery, that was lost when the base opened in 1941.

Major General Steve Schaick (shake), Chief of Chaplains for the United States Air Force., spoke at a service for those whose gravesites were lost to history.

"Even as we cannot undo the past, today we humbly confess our sins and honor the precious lives whose bodies rest on the sacred ground in front of us," Gen. Schaick said.

A search proved inconclusive but officials believe the cemetery was on a site near the current Manhattan Avenue gate.
