State Supreme Court Throws Out Hillsborough Transportation Sales Tax

TAMPA -- The state Supreme Court has thrown out Hillsborough County's one cent transportation sales tax.

Voters passed it in 2018, but County Commissioner Stacy White sued, claiming the commission overstepped its authority by restricting how the money could be spent. The high court agreed with White says state law only allows the commission to decide on spending tax dollars.

Justice Charles Canady called the provisions assigning money among various agencies a "scheme" that cannot be separated from the rest of the amendment.

Supporters of the transportation tax say they'll work on getting another tax on the ballot.
