A man drowned while on a fishing trip in upstate New York while trying to retrieve his keys from a lake. The Oswego County Sheriff's Office said that 44-year-old Anthony Davis was fishing with a group of friends at Oneida Lake in Hastings on Sunday (June 16) morning.
Davis dropped his keys in the lake and jumped into the water to find them. He was unable to make it back to land, so his friend, Wattie Cappers, 42, jumped into the water to try to help.
Cappers also found himself stranded in the water, unable to swim back to the shore.
Deputies from the Oswego County Sheriff's Office managed to reach Cappers and pull him out of the water. He was rushed to the hospital and is in stable condition.
Davis was pulled from the water by a diver from the Brewerton Fire Department. He was also taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Officials did not say how far out the men were or why they could not swim back to shore.
