Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan delivered her party's response to President Donald Trump's joint address to Congress on Tuesday (March 4). Speaking from Wyandotte, Michigan, Slotkin criticized President Trump's economic policies and warned that they could negatively impact Americans' lives. She argued that Trump's plans would lead to higher costs for groceries, housing, and healthcare, and could potentially drive the country into a recession.

Slotkin, a first-term senator, emphasized the importance of responsible governance and contrasted it with what she described as Trump's reckless leadership. She highlighted her background in national security and her commitment to middle-class values, stating, "Michigan literally invented the Middle Class."

She also criticized Elon Musk's involvement in government efficiency initiatives, questioning the lack of oversight and potential risks to Americans' privacy. Slotkin's remarks included a call to action for Americans to stay engaged and hold elected officials accountable.

In her speech, Slotkin reflected on her upbringing in a bipartisan household and stressed the importance of shared values over party affiliation. She urged Americans not to tune out and to actively participate in democracy by organizing and advocating for issues they care about.

“First: Don’t tune out. It’s easy to be exhausted, but America needs you now more than ever,” Slotkin said. “Second: Hold your elected officials, including me, accountable. Watch how they’re voting. Go to town halls and demand and take action. That’s as American as apple pie.

“Third: Organize. Pick just one issue you’re passionate about and engage, and doom-scrolling doesn’t count," she added. "Join a group that cares about your issue and act.”
