Intelligence Agency Employed Elaborate Ruse to Retrieve American Pilot Stra

A covert intelligence effort helped buy crucial time as U.S. forces worked to recover an airman stranded in hostile territory after his aircraft was shot down over Iran; their secret weapon? ‘deception.’

When a U.S. fighter jet went down in Iranian airspace on Friday, American military and intelligence teams quickly launched a high-risk mission to locate and extract the crew member left behind. As special operations forces rushed to pinpoint his location, intelligence officials devised a strategy to delay Iranian forces from reaching him first.

The incident began when Iranian forces shot down an F-15 fighter jet. While the pilot was quickly recovered, the weapons systems officer remained missing, prompting an urgent race between U.S. and Iranian forces to locate him.

According to two senior administration officials, the CIA circulated misinformation to Iran suggesting that U.S. personnel had already located the airman and were in the process of moving him out of the country by ground. This deceptive tactic created a window of opportunity, allowing U.S. intelligence to identify the airman’s exact position and pass that information to leaders at the White House and Pentagon. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the operation publicly, according to The New York Times.

By late Saturday, U.S. special operations forces successfully recovered the airman. In a social media post early Sunday, President Donald Trump praised the mission as one of “the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in U.S. History.” The rescued crew member, a weapons systems officer, had been stranded inside Iran for nearly two days.

“We have rescued the seriously wounded, and really brave, F-15 Crew Member/Officer, from deep inside the mountains of Iran … An AMAZING show of bravery and talent by all!” Trump said in another post on Sunday, adding that no U.S. personnel were lost during the mission.

Trump noted that Iranian troops were “looking hard, in big numbers, and getting close” before the U.S. operation commenced.

According to a report from The New York Times, the rescue involved hundreds of special operations personnel and was carried out under the cover of darkness. Trump added that the mission included “dozens of aircraft” equipped with “the most lethal weapons in the World” to support the extraction.

Officials said the CIA played a central role not only in the deception effort but also in identifying the airman’s location and relaying that intelligence ahead of the rescue.

One official described the effort as “the ultimate ‘needle in a haystack’” mission.
